Beginning in 2011, the Institute for the Study of Human Rights and the School of Continuing Education (SCE) will offer a summer certificate in human rights.
Curriculum
- Introduction to Human Rights
- International Human Rights Law
- Two elective courses (will vary by year)
Requirements and Policies
Students must take the two core courses and two electives to receive the certificate. The two core courses will be offered each summer. However, the elective courses offered may vary. Students can complete the certificate in a single summer, or divide the classes over two summers.
At least two of the courses must be taken during the summer and we strongly encourage students to take all four courses during the summer term. Students who would like to take one or two courses during the regular academic year must contact ISHR's director of education at
Students who complete the curriculum with a grade of B or better in all courses will receive a ISHR/SCE human rights certificate.
Course credit cannot be applied to both the certificate and another Columbia credential.
Columbia degree students, non-degree students, visiting students, and newly accepted students are eligible to participate in the certificate program.
